Mission Statement

This grassroots movement was established to:

1. Fight anti-fat stigmas and stereotypes

2. Promote awareness of  the complexities of weight issues

3. Promote education and sensitivity

4. Change society's attitude towards overweight people

5. Help end prejudice and discrimination in all its forms.

6. Lobby for more formal bans on weight discrimination and  include weight  in all anti-discrimination laws.

We all recognize the value of promoting healthy habits and obesity prevention... but that should never be a basis to harass, badger or victimize another human being on the basis of weight.

We will fight for you and educate others that being overweight should never be perceived as a negative reflection of your character nor does it give others any rights to discriminate against you…

Does Anti-Fat Stigma affect You?

Who is considered overweight?  An adult who has a Body Mass Index over 25.  That often translates to around 20 pounds above  “ideal weight”.... 65% of the United States adult population is considered overweight.

So, hundreds of millions of people, including you, are subjected to daily prejudice and discrimination.

A Critical and Urgent Action

We need, collectively, to fight against discrimination and Anti-Fat Stigma that plagues our society.

Each one of us has experienced discrimination, prejudice, rejection and exclusion in one form or another…   We face  it on a daily basis... in subtle ways.... and in not so subtle ways… both being equally hurtful.

Good health does not depend solely on body weight.  Many slender individuals have far more health issues than some people in their community that are overweight.  Younger slender people are having heart attacks when some older overweight individuals have never had a heart attack.

Education
Consequences of Anti-Fat Stigma

Anti-Fat stigma can cause victimized overweight children immediate and lifelong harm. Overweight children and teens are often excluded, rejected, laughed at and taunted by their peers.  Also, teachers may harbor negative views of overweight students. This can often lead to low self-esteem, poor school performance, avoidance of physical activity and, in serious cases, depression and suicide.

Who is Discriminating Against You?

  • Women who reject dating an overweight man “on sight"

  • Men who reject dating an overweight woman "on sight"

  • Employers who will not hire a person who is overweight

  • Anti-fat stigma by Hollywood, Fashion and the media who promote very thin models

  • Inferior medical care by Physicians and other health care providers

  • Insurance companies

  • Airlines and Bus companies

The Importance of Fundraising

President Obama won, against all odds, by the sheer power of grassroots movements and individual donations.

We can do the same.  Your voluntary membership be it $5 or $10,000 or more, is the only vehicle we have to promote awareness, fat acceptance, raise consciousness and promote anti-discrimination laws.

While laws are very necessary, education and personal involvement are equally important.

Our Goal of 200 Million Members

With over 200 Million Americans that are "classified" as overweight, it is preposterous that such a very small percentage of the population is involved in defending the victims of weight-based discrimination.

We need to get as many of the 200 Million Americans that are considered overweight involved... Your contribution can make a difference.

Your contribution will help us reach our collective goals faster....  It will allow us to empower members, businesses and sponsors who support  our movement.  Your contribution may even get you, in the short or long run, a stable, long lasting job be it  work from home or work within your local community.

Let us start building our 200 Million membership base starting with you... your family and friends... then everyone who cares about this movement and wants to see us reach the much-needed urgent change in societal attitude.

Equitable Accommodation

A certain airline has a policy designed to harass and embarrass overweight passengers.  It has historically bullied overweight passengers into buy 2 passenger tickets even before they know whether the plane is full or not.  We will not name that airline as we do not want to give it free advertising!...

We call on all airlines, doctor offices, restaurants, agencies and businesses to provide  equitable accommodations, so that all people, regardless of their weight, may equally enjoy goods, services, facilities, privileges, and advantages of any place of public accommodation. In the event there must be a surcharge to cover the cost of accommodation, this increase may be applied to all persons across the board not be applied solely to the person or class of persons being accommodated.

The Ugly Faces of Discrimination

You encounter it every day... In dating, in relationships, in social life, at the grocery store, at the theater, at work, in public transportation, at the hospital, the staff at your Doctor's office, the airlines, even at the gym... The dirty looks, the condescending attitude towards you, the exclusion from society, the mocking words, "You're FAT!", "why don't you lose some weight"... It is all hurtful and unnecessary.

Any form of exclusion of others or discrimination against others should no longer be acceptable… We will fight to eliminate it...

Anti-discrimination Federal Laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of age, sex, handicap, race, color, sexual orientation, national origin and physical disability but there are no Federal laws to shelter overweight from the ruthless daily bias of Society.

Discrimination against overweight individuals on a daily basis is one of  the ugliest and most prevalent forms of prejudice.

Overweight individuals are constantly vulnerable to negative bias, prejudice and institutional discrimination  in health care, education and work environments.

Anti-fat stigma also rears its ugly head in the form of interpersonal and societal discrimination like verbal abuse, name calling, condescending remarks, fat jokes, mocking, insults and harassment from strangers, friends, acquaintances and even family members, as well as physical violence like hitting, kicking, pushing, shoving, and, most importantly, social exclusion like being avoided and being treated with less respect and courtesy than others.

As of today, weight bias remains socially permissible.   It is often dismissed as a joking matter and rarely noticed, challenged, or punished... As a result, millions of overweight individuals are faced,  with social rejection and unfair treatment on a daily basis, with no support or protection.

We are determined to change that... So should you!....

Together We can change that!...

A Message for People of All Ages
Think Twice Before You Discriminate Again

Everyone has a choice... A choice to discriminate against overweight people or to do the right thing and never discriminate...

Please do not discriminate against people who are overweight.

They are good people too!... Human beings with feelings... sensitivities... and hearts... They are someone's father, grandmother, son and niece... They have the right to peaceful existence... and life with dignity, peace, harmony and warm inclusion in society.

When you interact with overweight individuals, always remember this!

When you choose to reject them at first sight....
When you call them names and poke fun at them...
When you exclude them from your social life
and circle of friends...
When you give them the cold shoulder...
When you are rude to them...

that the person ending up being hurt may be your daughter, your father, your grandmother, your cousin, your niece, your best friend... and, at times, the person ending up being hurt, may be... you!...

The Audacity of Hope
Legislative Achievements

You have a choice between maintaining the status quo... or helping us reach our goal of 100 Million members as quickly as possible!...

Clearly, there is an urgent need for federal legislation that will protect individuals from weight discrimination

There is Hope!... Anti-fat bias will have to end... Michigan was a start... and we hope to include weight  in all anti-discrimination laws.

The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (Act 453 of 1976) prohibits discrimination against employees in any term or condition of employment based on age, sex, familial status, race, national origin, color, religion, marital status, height, weight, or pregnancy.

The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act re-defines civil rights  to prohibit discriminatory practices, policies, and customs and provides remedies and penalties.

Way to go Michigan!... It is a start... but it is far from enough... We still have the other 49 states.... Currently, there are no federal laws tat prohibit discrimination based on weight... and we still have to change society's attitude towards overweight people!...

Upcoming Legislation
Massachusetts Bill to Outlaw Fat Discrimination
and
to give special protection to overweight people

Massachusetts Representative Byron Rushing is sponsoring House Bill 1844 which would add the terms "height" and "weight" to the state's anti-discrimination laws.

On March 25th 2008,  experts testified in favor of the Bill with no opposition.  When the bill passes, it will be a critical precedent that would encourage other states to pass similar legislations.

"This is one of the last physical aspects of people that you can acceptably laugh about," said Rushing, who is African-American, slender, of average height and a graduate of Harvard and MIT, "You can be a shock jock on the radio and talk about fat people for a solid week and no one would ever think of having you lose your job. It's still acceptable."

The bill applies mainly to the workplace but also covers landlords and real estate interactions.

More Formal Bans on Weight Discrimination

We will continue to seek protection for those who experience weight-based discrimination.

San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Santa Cruz, CA, also have formal bans on weight discrimination.

Furthermore, in Canada, and by Supreme Court order, overweight air travelers have won the right to two seats for the price of one on domestic flights.

This is still a drop in the bucket... but the journey of a thousand miles start with one step...
